Summary

The director, Wes Ball, had a vision for a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda using mo-cap technology, which he expressed in a tweet back in 2010. Wes Ball’s previous experience with mo-cap in films like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and his cancelled Mouse Guard film shows that he has the skills to make the live-action Zelda movie work. Mo-cap technology will be crucial for bringing various characters and species from the Legend of Zelda games to life in the movie, such as Ganondorf, the Zora, Rito, Gorons, and the franchise’s monsters.

The Legend of Zelda is finally getting a live-action movie, and the plans for the film are even more exciting based on the director’s 13-year old plan. Although fans have been clamoring for a The Legend of Zelda movie for ages now, most of them assumed that the film would be animated due to its massive scope and fantastical setting. Because of this, some potential viewers have been skeptical since it was announced that The Legend of Zelda movie would be live-action, but it seems like this may be the right choice.

Nintendo finally reentered the feature film world with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and the box office success of the film proved that this was a smart move. In the wake of Super Mario Bros.’ jump to the big screen, Nintendo has announced a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, showing that the company intends to continue adapting their video game series into films. Nintendo has teamed up with Sony, producer Avi Arad, and director Wes Ball to bring the project to life, with fans crossing their fingers that the film will be a hit.

Wes Ball’s Vision For Legend Of Zelda Is Perfect For The Live-Action Approach

Although Wes Ball was just announced to be the director of The Legend of Zelda movie, his vision for the perfect live-action approach was planned out 13 years ago. Back in 2010, Wes Ball posted about The Legend of Zelda movie on Twitter, saying that mo-cap technology used in Avatar would be perfect for a The Legend of Zelda movie. Now that Wes Ball is attached to the project all these years later, it seems likely that this is the approach that will be taken.

Since making that post back in 2010, Wes Ball has gone on to be involved with a number of projects, showing that he has what it takes to pull off this live-action approach. Wes Ball is the director of the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, showing that The Legend of Zelda won’t be the first time he’s worked on a film that heavily uses mo-cap. Wes Ball’s canceled Mouse Guard film is another showcase that he has what it takes to make Zelda work in live-action.

Which Legend Of Zelda Characters Need To Use Mo-Cap

Although Link and Zelda probably won’t need to use motion capture technology, plenty of characters from the games will need to make use of it. Notably, The Legend of Zelda’s villain Ganondorf will probably have to use it in order to be portrayed in live-action. While its possible that Ganondorf could work with a giant actor and practical effects, mo-cap seems like the better route, especially if he appears in his Ganon form.

Many of the species that populate Hyrule will also have to use mo-cap to work. The Zora, Rito, and Gorons are just some examples, and many of the franchise’s monsters could make use of the tech as well. While it may be hard to envision The Legend of Zelda in live action, it could finally work thanks to mo-cap.
