According to Variety, Barerra made posts on her Instagram stories, citing that she has been researching the conflict. She wrote, “I have been actively looking for videos and information about the Palestinian side for the last two weeks or so, following accounts etc. Why? Because western media only shows the other side. Why they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself.” The actress continued to say that the algorithm on Instagram has only shown videos discussing Israel’s point of view of the war.
“Usually, the algorithm on social media gets the gist. Well..my discover page on IG will ONLY show me videos showing and talking about the Israeli side. Censorship is very real. Palestinians know this, they know the world has been trying to make them invisible for decades. Keep sharing,” she continued.

Barrera continued to reference the conflict as a form of “ethnic cleansing” and “genocide” after writing, “Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp” in another post. Amid news of her firing, she posted the following quote, “At the end of the day, I’d rather be excluded for who I include than be included for who I exclude.”
“Scream VII” director Christopher Landon also addressed Barrera’s firing on social media and wrote, “Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.” Spyglass Media Group released a statement and said, “We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Fans of the franchise expressed their thoughts about Barrera’s firing and wondered what would happen to her character, Sam Carpenter.
