Before Thanksgiving Day, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall on turkey gravy from Seneca Foods Corporation’s Hy-Vee. The administration said that consuming the gravy could result in a severe reaction. The recall was issued after it was discovered that the label on the Hy-Vee turkey gravy glass jars failed to mention that beef gravy was included in the contents, Newsweek reported.
“As a precautionary measure, Seneca Foods Corporation is announcing a voluntary recall of mislabeled Hy-Vee turkey gravy in glass jars that actually contain beef gravy,” a statement said on the FDA’s website. “No other retailers are affected” by the mislabeling of the products.
A potential reaction that could occur, as identified by the FDA, is anaphylactic shock, which would result in difficulty breathing and a drop in blood pressure, Newsweek reported. If someone with a soy allergy were to ingest the product, it is possible that they would experience a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction,” according to the statement. However, it was stated that the severity of a reaction that a consumer experiences can be “unpredictable.”
As of Nov. 21, there have been no known reports of any health issues caused by the mislabeling of the jars of turkey gravy, according to the statement on the FDA’s website.
Less than one percent of the turkey gravy in Hy-Vee stores has been affected by the recall. It is advised that customers check for Hy-Vee Turkey Gravy in 12 oz glass jars with a UPC of 75450-03608 and an individual lot code of A3CG162M A3CG192M, according to the outlet.
The company is allowing customers to return their turkey gravy to the store location where they purchased it from.
