Days after Derek Chauvin was stabbed by an inmate at a federal prison, administrators say they are committed to protecting the former police officer who was convicted for the death of George Floyd.

Chauvin was listed in stable condition after being stabbed at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tuscon on Friday. According to Radar Online, his mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, and his attorney, Gregory M. Erickson, said they were “left in the dark” about his condition but a spokeperson for Erickson said “We have heard that he is expected to survive.”
FCI administrators said they are committed to keeping the disgraced police officer safe. They told the outlet that “the Federal Correctional Complex Tucson takes seriously our duty to protect the individuals entrusted in our custody.”
“I’m not going to give my energy towards anything that happens within those four walls — because my energy went towards getting him in those four walls. Whatever happens in those four walls, I don’t really have any feelings about it,”

The federal prison also temporarily suspended all visits until further notice but it is unclear if it was due to the recent stabbing. Erickson also added in his statement that the prison failed to protect his client and called the facility “poorly run.”
“As an outsider, I view this lack of communication with his attorneys and family members as completely outrageous. It appears to be indicative of a poorly run facility and indicates how Derek’s assault was allowed to happen.”
Derek Chauvin gained widespread attention and infamy for his role in the tragic death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020. As a former Minneapolis police officer, Chauvin was captured on video kneeling on Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes, leading to Floyd’s death and sparking global protests against police brutality and systemic racism. Chauvin was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter.
