A black female high school student was suspended for five days after her nose was broken during an apparent hate crime by a white male student last week. Other students who witnessed the attack said she was defending herself and the male student was only suspended for three days.

The incident occurred at the Mission East High School in Shawnee Mission, Kansas where a 15-year-old black female student, only identified as Bre, reportedly confronted a white female classmate for using racial slurs and calling other Black students “slaves.” As Bre walked away, a male student tells her to “shut the f–k up and starts hurling the n word as reported by the Kansas City Defender.

Bre, according to other students who witnessed the ensuing incident, asked the white male student what he said before he allegedly started charging towards her. According to one student, Bre was suspended for defending herself against an unwarranted attack, and school administrators are doing nothing to combat racism among students. Following the attack, Bre was suspended from school for five days, while the white male student was reportedly suspended for three days.

“Everyone is equally frustrated and angry. It should have never gotten to this point. They are very quiet about it. The administrators won’t voice that this is wrong. Racist students never get in serious trouble. We’re tired of trying to confide in people and administrators who aren’t doing anything for us and won’t help us,” said Jaxon, a Black student at Shawnee Mission East.

Another student said that the attack against Bre is serious and there have been various warning signs that led to this build up. Additionally, most of the racist behavior have been allegedly conducted by upperclassmen at the school.

In the aftermath of the alleged hate crime, an email was issued to parents to address the situation:

“As a school and a community, we know that in order for students to learn, they must first feel safe and supported. Shawnee Mission East teachers, administrators, and staff will continue to do our absolute best to help every student who enters our school feel safe and supported so they can be at their very best…the words we use matter. Racially charged language, insults, and slurs will not be tolerated in our school…”

The students have also accused their principal and other school administrators of allegedly racial profiling Black students. There was one instance where the principal reportedly made racist remarks about Blacks appearing “intimidating” or looking like they were going to jump someone when they are walking in groups.

Students have organized a walkout to protest the school administrators’ response towards the constant racism at the school, Bre’s suspension, and calling for the firing of specific administrators.
