Summary
Swarm season 2 has gotten a discouraging update. The Prime Video show, which was co-created by Donald Glover, followed Andrea “Dre” Greene (Dominique Fishback), a young woman who is part of an intense pop music fandom known as The Swarm. Her obsession with Beyoncé-esque starlet Ni’Jah (Nirine S. Brown) leads to dangerous consequences for herself and the people around her. The ensemble cast of the show, which premiered season 1 in full this March, also includes Chloe Bailey, Damson Idris, Rory Culkin, and Paris Jackson.
People recently spoke with Dominique Fishback while in attendance at the Gotham Awards. When asked about the possible return of her show Swarm, she shared that the plan was “always” for the show to be a limited series. She said “I’m OK with that” because, while she thinks the “shock value” of the show worked, going back to the well might diminish its effectiveness. Read her full quote below:
No season 2. But I’m OK with that. I’m OK with that because I feel like the shock factor of the first season really got people — and sometimes when you try to go back in there, I don’t want it to be shock for shock value. You want it to really to end on a high.
What’s Next for Dominique Fishback?
While the ambiguous Swarm ending may be the last audiences see of the show, Fishback’s willingness to let it go belies the fact that the up-and-coming star may have many other projects on her mind. Already, she has appeared in quite a few major titles. This includes starring in the Oscar-winning movie Judas and the Black Messiah opposite Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, as well as the Apple TV+ miniseries The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey opposite Samuel L. Jackson.
Judas and the Black Messiah was nominated for six Oscars overall, winning for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actor (for Daniel Kaluuya).
While there aren’t currently any upcoming roles that have been officially announced for Fishback, this could be the result of delays amid the 2023 actors strike, which only recently came to an end. However, after Swarm premiered, she starred in the summer blockbuster Transformers: Rise of the Beasts opposite In the Heights star Anthony Ramos. A sequel for that movie has already been greenlit, so it’s possible that she could reprise her role in addition to any other upcoming projects that have yet to be announced.
The actor’s position on season 2 could also reflect her feeling about appearing in another Transformers movie, so it remains to be seen if her character, museum intern Elena Wallace, will make a return appearance. Regardless, Fishback likely has plenty of roles ahead of her that aren’t her Swarm character Dre Greene. While the show earned her an Emmy nomination, the rising star’s future seems very bright.
