Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige stated definitively that Tony Stark’s death at the end of Avengers: Endgame will continue to stand.
“We are going to keep that moment and not touch that moment again,” Feige said in a Vanity Fair interview indicating Stark’s sacrifice to defeat Thanos will remain an iconic and unaltered moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Feige added: “We all worked very hard for many years to get to that, and we would never want to magically undo it in any way.”
Robert Downey Jr. was hesitant to reopen the emotional wound of Tony Stark’s death by conducting reshoots or even redoing a single line of dialogue for Avengers: Endgame.
“We’d already said tearful goodbyes on the last day of shooting. Everybody had moved on emotionally,” Joe Russo said. “We promised him it would be the last time we made him do it—ever.”
“That was a difficult thing for him to do, to come back to pick up that line,” Anthony Russo added “When he did come back, we were shooting on a stage directly opposite where he auditioned for Tony Stark. So his last line as Tony Stark was shot literally a couple hundred feet from his original audition that got him the role.”
Tony Stark’s death in Endgame concludes an unprecedented 11-year journey that has made him one of cinema’s most beloved characters. When Robert Downey Jr. first stepped into the role of Stark in 2008’s Iron Man, nobody could have predicted this arrogant arms dealer would launch the highest-grossing film franchise in history.
Yet Downey’s wit, charm, and humanity resonated with audiences. We watched him evolve from a self-centered playboy to a selfless hero willing to do “whatever it takes” to defeat evil and protect the universe.
Though it is heartbreaking to say goodbye, Stark’s sacrifice cementing his iconic legacy is a fitting end to Downey’s indelible portrayal of this complex, flawed, and ultimately heroic character. Stark’s presence will be deeply missed, but his influence will live on.
