5 Amazing Black Metal Albums You Might’ve Missed in 2025

Three-plus decades in, East Bay punk trio Green Day have a rare opportunity. Each of the members, together yet in spite of the years, sit down and reflect on the past, unraveling two of their most heralded albums, American Idiot and Dookie, as they turn 20 and 30, respectively — and while they ponder the prowess that led them there, and prepare for their 2024 global stadium tour in celebration, they also are looking ahead — opening up for the first conversation about their soon-to-be-released 14th studio album, Saviors.

For our Winter 2023 Issue, photographer Jonathan Weiner captures the band in their Southern California rehearsal space, where they gear up for an exciting 2024 world tour, steep in the sounds of their exceptional new album, and, of course, goof off a little.

In conversation with AltPress Editor-in-Chief Anna Zanes, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool unravel their expansive, almost maplike forthcoming album. Additionally, the trio talk about returning to the studio with Rob Cavallo, dusting off the Dookie 4-tracks, and reveal what’s kept them undefeated after all these years. “We’ve known each other for so long, and we started making a mess together at such a young age, and it’s just continued and evolved since then,” Armstrong says. “I think that’s really rare now. You realize, now, how grateful you are that you’re able to have that experience.”

Preorder your copy today, and get an exclusive Green Day-inspired art print by artist Eri Wakiyama in the AP Shop.

Stay tuned this week — the Winter 2023 Issue also comes with three alternate collectible covers, as well as stories on Zulu, WARGASM, hemlocke springs, and more.
