Iman Shumpert has denied claims made by his estranged wife Teyana Taylor that he exhibited “cruel treatment” during their marriage.
The singer had previously listed “cruel treatment” at the hands of the former NBA star as her grounds for divorce.
Now, Shumpert is claiming that she has provided no proof that he ever did so and is petitioning the court to have their reason for divorce changed to “irretrievable broken bond,” according to TMZ.
Under law, “cruel treatment” is defined as “willful infliction of pain bodily or mental … [that] reasonably justifies apprehension of danger to life, limb, or health.”
Teyana Taylor filed for divorce in January, long before they announced their separation in September.
In the divorce filing, Taylor also asked for primary custody of their children as well as joint legal custody and child support.
In the filing, the former G.O.O.D. Music singer accuses Shumpert of “treating her cruelly and displaying extreme narcissistic behavior throughout the majority of their marriage.”
She also accuses the former New York Knicks player of “being extremely emotionally and mentally abusive towards her,” adding that he could be prone to exhibiting “cruel behavior and selfishness.”
Her filing also claims Shumpert cheated on her multiple times during their relationship, contrary to her previous claim that “infidelity ain’t one of the reasons for our departure.”
Taylor’s petition for divorce also includes details such as Shumpert crashing her Rolls-Royce and fleeing the scene to avoid arrest, displaying jealous behavior whenever she was in the spotlight and asking her not to work.
Taylor had previously filed for divorce in 2020 but later withdrew the petition after the couple reconciled.
Since separating, Taylor has been forced to deny rumors that she was pregnant.
While appearing on the red carpet for the Gotham Awards last month, Taylor wore a tight-fitting black dress which some onlookers thought made her look pregnant.
She quickly shut down the rumors on Instagram, saying: “Auntey ain’t preggo y’all! I just had to pee. Y’all know that pee pouch ain’t nothing to play wit. My kangaroo pouch ass.”
Taylor was at the awards ceremony as she was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress for her performance in A Thousand and One but she lost out to Lily Gladstone for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
