In a statement on its website, the company announced Friday that it will close global operations and be “effective immediately.” “For new customers interested in SmileDirectClub services, thank you for your interest, but aligner treatment is no longer available through our telehealth platform,” the statement continued.
Existing customers were informed that customer support will no longer be available, and they are expected to continue their monthly payments until their installment plan is paid in full. According to My FOX 8, the company reportedly failed to find any investors and racked up $900 million in debt since it was publicly traded and never turned a profit.
“For existing customers, we apologize for the inconvenience, but customer care support is no longer available. Thank you for your support and letting us improve over 2 million smiles and lives.“

Founded in 2014, the company provides a convenient and affordable alternative to traditional braces. SmileDirectClub’s aligners are custom-made based on impressions or scans of your teeth, and they are worn for 22 hours a day. Treatment typically takes 4-6 months and is significantly cheaper than traditional braces.
However, dentists, orthodontists, and the American Dental Association spoke out about the company’s practices because it endangered patients who thought they could skip out on check-ups, which can lead to serious dental risks. The company filed multiple lawsuits against those who made the claims.
Some customers have reported excellent results, while others have experienced pain, discomfort, and delays in treatment.
Customers currently on the SmileyPlan are expected to continue their payments, but the Lifetime Smile Guarantee doesn’t exist, and customers have to wait for more information regarding a refund. As for their aligners, they have to seek professional services before continuing.
