Jada Pinkett Smith is doubling down on her love for her husband Will Smith as she claims that the Chris Rock Oscars slap saved her marriage, and for that, she “will never leave” her man. She even calls the incident “a holy slap,” being “so many positive things came after it.”
Like it or not, Jada Pinkett Smith, 52, keeps roping us back into this group chat with her husband Will Smith, 55, which all jumped off with the book tour of her tell-all memoir, ‘Worthy,’ which was released in October. During her promo run, Pinkett had her marriage in the news cycle every single day, leaving social media shocked at the revelations she was making, but also leaving some fans overstuffed with TMI (too much information).

However, one of the biggest bombshells that Pinkett dropped happened to be the fact that she and Smith were separated for nearly 7 years without anyone publicly knowing. Pinkett claimed that she and her husband weren’t living together from 2016 to 2022, specifically, up until the night of the viral Oscars slap.
In October, Pinkett told PEOPLE she and Smith weren’t “ready yet” to divorce, adding, “[We were] still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership … In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out. We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us.”

Jada Pinkett Smith later clarified that when her husband Will Smith walked up onto the 2022 Oscars stage to slap Chris Rock, 58, in her honor, moments before that, the two were privately separated. However, after seeing Smith call her his “wife” and defend her, Pinkett said it essentially turned her on so much that they both decided to give their marriage another try.
Pinkett told NBC News’ Hoda Kotb that Smith hadn’t referred to her as “his wife” for a while before that, as they had been separated going on 7 years. She said, “First of all, I’m really shocked because mind you, I’m not there. We haven’t called each other husband and wife in a long time. I’m like, ‘What is going on right now? Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth?’ I’m really worried for Will because I don’t know what’s going on.”s
Weeks after her interview with Kotb, Pinkett held an event in Los Angeles for her book release, where she clarified to eventgoers how the once-estranged couple got back on the right track at the Oscars. Pinkett told the crowd, “This is where the media wants to clamp on something and spin it all around, and I get it. Yes, we were separated for 7 years … UNTIL … Oscars night!”

Since her book tour, Jada Pinkett Smith is again confirming that after the 2022 Chris Rock Oscars slap, which she calls a “holy slap,” she and Will Smith are locked in and she’s “never leaving him!” Speaking with Daily Mail, Pinkett said, “I nearly didn’t even attend the Oscars that year, but I’m glad I did. I call it the ‘holy slap’ now because so many positive things came after it.”
Pinkett added, “That moment of the sh*t hitting the fan is when you see where you really are. After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him. Who knows where our relationship would be if that hadn’t happened?”
