Timothée Chalamet has revealed that he still doesn’t know the Barbie cameo that director Greta Gerwig had planned for him.
The Wonka star stopped by The Tonight Show Wednesday night to talk about his latest movie, where he portrays the legendary chocolatier, but he also discussed the cameo that never happened.
Chalamet said initially “there was an idea for Saoirse Ronan and I to do a cameo” in the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling-led movie. But unfortunately, it never panned out for either of the actors to make an appearance in the film.
“I don’t know what the cameo would have been,” he explained to host Jimmy Fallon. “I think it would have been one of the rejected Kens or Barbies, not Alan, but something. Maybe there was a reject French one along the way. I don’t know.”
Although Chalamet noted that he did get to see Gerwig and the Barbie set because they had just finished building it when Wonka wrapped filming. “It was kind of going from like a fantastical London chocolate [set, to this] insane [Barbie set],” he said.
Earlier this year, Gerwig admitted that she “was so annoyed” that they couldn’t arrange for Ronan and Chalamet to appear in the film because it would have “felt like doing something without my children. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I sort of feel like their mom.”
“Well, it was always going to have to be a sort of smaller thing because [Saoirse] was actually producing at the time, which I am so proud of her for. And of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a specialty cameo,” Gerwig told CinemaBlend in July. “I was also going to do a specialty cameo with Timmy, and both of them couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much.”
