Don Omar stopped by Billboard News and spoke with Billboard‘s Latin Chief Content Officer, Leila Cobo about his longstanding rivalry with Daddy Yankee, gives his thoughts on his retirement and more.

Don Omar: Yo conocí a Raymond Ayala, porque tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con Raymond y él conoció a William. Esos dos personajes con los que la gente no se da mucho por ahí, porque cuando se encuentran con nosotros somos Daddy Yankee y Don Omar. Y algo que yo siempre admiré de Raymond es que Raymond era Daddy Yankee 24/7. No importaba dónde estuviera, he was Daddy Yankee, the brand, y el product, el artista, se manejó así, se cohibió. Quizás de las mismas cosas como yo también me he cohibido de muchas. Cuando yo escuché que Raymond estaba dejando —y no es dejando, porque Raymond ya lo hizo todo— por encontrar paz interior, lo respeté más que nunca. Porque la gente no hace eso. La gente no lo deja todo, y cualquier persona que sepa algo de la industria puede tener claro que Daddy Yankee lo tenía todo. Cuando puedes dejar todo por alinearte espiritualmente, tú ahora sí mereces todo. Yo no lo voy a hacer. Cuando yo siento que necesito un año, dos años, tres años, yo me voy. Y los quiero y los adoro y cuando pueda nos vemos, pero yo necesitaba esos espacios de mi vida para no seguir siendo Don Omar y poder ver la vida como William.

Leila Cobo: Y para tu mental health, tu tranquilidad, necesitas lo que necesitas.

Don Omar:Para crecer. Y yo creo que Raymond era uno de los tipos de temple frío. Frío. Cuando tú puedes escoger, “no importa si duele, no importa si necesito ayuda, no importa si estoy triste, yo soy el artista”, usted tiene una coraza de acero. Y cuando supe que su nueva búsqueda estaba en eso, ese día terminó de ganar mi respeto por completo. Por completo.
