Henry Thomas portrayed the ever-lovable Doctor Mid-Nite in Stargirl. However, the actor has no desire to return to the superhero genre anytime soon.
Despite not being a big part of the series, Henry Thomas made a big impact with fans as Doctor Mid-Nite on the CW’s Stargirl. While the series has been canceled, a brand new DC Universe reboot could mean new life for the Stargirl characters on the big screen. However, it seems Thomas isn’t hoping to land another role as a superhero, admitting he’s never been the biggest fan of the genre:
“Well, you know, I’ve just come off the strike and I need a job. I’m not going to say no [Laughs], Thomas joked in a recent interview with ComicBookMovie.com. “I do have to admit, I’m not really – and never have been – crazy about the superhero genre. I do appreciate it and I liked comic books when I was a kid a bit, but I never really got into it.”
“I feel like it’s become the Western for our age. It’s this overplayed genre,” He continued. “I know it’s gotten a lot of flak as not being real cinema and all this [Laughs] which, arguably so, but it is entertainment and people have responded to those things. That’s what we’re meant to be doing, anyway, but at the same time, I would like to see something new.”
“I would like to see a revival of historical genre films or maybe mainstream fantasy. It would be cool. There are a lot of stories that can be told which haven’t been yet.”
It’s certainly refreshing to hear an actor have a tame take on the superhero genre despite not personally liking it. Henry Thomas is right to draw parallels between superheroes and westerns given the trends of Hollywood.
The Future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
