The Quaker Oats company has issued a nationwide recall on dozens of its granola bars and cereals. According to a notice published by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the announcement was shared on Friday, December 15.

What Prompted The Recall
According to the FDA, the recall of particular granola bars and cereal is because they may have been contaminated with Salmonella. The announcement notes that Salmonella is an organism that can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections” in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Additionally, those infected by Salmonella may experience diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
In rare cases, the Salmonella organism can enter an individual’s bloodstream. This can cause more severe arterial infections, endocarditis, which leads to joint pain, and arthritis.
Information Regarding Impacted Products
The FDA notes that the impacted products were sold nationwide, as well as in Puerto Rico, Guam, and Saipan. Affected granola bar products include, but are not limited to, Quaker Big Chewy Bars Chocolate Chip, Quaker Big Chewy Bars Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, and Quaker Big Chewy Bars Variety Pack.
Additionally, impacted granola cereals include, but are not limited to, Quaker Puffed Granola Apple Cinnamon Cereal, Quaker Puffed Granola Blueberry Vanilla Cereal, Quaker Simply Granola Oats, Honey & Almonds Cereal, and more.

According to the company’s announcement, there have not been any “confirmed reports of illness” related to the recall as of December 15. Additionally, Quaker Oats has not disclosed how the potential contamination may have taken place.

What To Do If You Have Recalled Items
According to the FDA’s notice, consumers of Quaker Oats are encouraged to check their pantries for impacted products. If recalled products are found, they should not be eaten but immediately disposed of.
USA Today reports that Salmonella causes 1.35 million illnesses, over 26,000 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the U.S. each year.
