It seems the DCEU is going out with a whimper, not a bang. Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom has officially tied for the worst Cinemascore in the failed cinematic universe.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom has come out to middling reviews. While the film is doing better with fans than its predecessor, critics remain unimpressed with the final project in the DCEU. This seems to be reflected in its Cinemascore, with a flat “B” tying it with The Flash and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for the worst-received films.

Of course, a “B” certainly isn’t bad. However, for the final installment in the DCEU, fans were certainly hoping for more out of Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. Luckily, next year seems to be a tolerance break for superhero movies of all kinds, so here’s to hoping 2025 roars back better than ever, even without the King of Atlantis!

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.

Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe after Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom!
