A Kentucky man has been arrested after allegedly walking into a church in his underwear and strangling the priest who was conducting service.
According to local reports, the suspect out of Webster County has been identified as 35-year-old Steven Sargent. Per an arrest citation, on December 23, Webster County deputies said they received a call to St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sebree, Kentucky.

Upon their arrival, deputies said that Sargent was under the influence of drugs when he allegedly walked into the church, wearing only his underwear and a t-shirt. They said he started yelling at the priest on his way in and then started to assault him.
The priest, identified only as Father Carmelo, told deputies that Sargent “said disrespectful things about religion,” so he asked him to leave. That’s when the priest allegedly got assaulted. Deputies claimed the Kentucky man “hit the priest in the chest and put both hands around his neck and began strangling him.”

Members of the congregation told deputies that they tried to intervene in the attack and attempted to restrain Sargent. They said there were about three men in the church who successfully held him down and waited until the deputies arrived to place him into custody.
Once the authorities apprehended Sargent, the arresting officer said he asked the Kentucky man if he had taken anything, and that he admitted to “smoking meth 15 minutes prior to walking into the church.” Per the arrest citation, Sargent also allegedly told the officer that there was an active meth lab in his house that was going to explode with his wife and child inside.
Acting upon the information, deputies, along with Kentucky State Police officials, went to the man’s home; however, they claimed there were no drugs nor no meth lab found.

Additionally, the Bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro told the media that Father Carmelo’s main concern was for the children who were inside the church at the time. He said they were extremely frightened. In a statement released, Bishop Medley asked people to send prayers for everyone involved.
