Jerry Lopez, a dedicated family man and dad of seven, was fatally shot by a carjacker who had just murdered his own mother. Jerry Lopez, a hardworking father, left his home in southwestern Las Vegas early in the morning, like any other day. Little did he know that his path would tragically intersect with the suspect’s. As Jerry pulled over his family van to make way for the pursuing emergency vehicles, he became an unwitting victim of the carjacker’s violent spree. The suspect approached the van, opened fire on Jerry, and callously dragged his lifeless body out of the vehicle.
The deadly crime spree began before dawn on Wednesday when the suspect shot his mother near their childhood home in southeastern Las Vegas. As police officers arrived to investigate the initial shooting, they were met with more gunfire and took cover. Simultaneously, the suspect seized an unoccupied patrol car and fled towards the southwestern edge of the city. The suspect then abandoned the stolen patrol car about 8 miles away and proceeded to carjack two more innocent bystanders before encountering Jerry Lopez.

Jerry Lopez’s wife, Karen, shared with The Associated Press that her husband was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had pulled over their family van to allow the pursuing emergency vehicles to pass. Tragically, the suspect approached the van, opened fire on Jerry, and forcibly removed his lifeless body from the vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene, with police officers firing multiple rounds into the stolen van, which eventually came to a stop.
Karen Lopez and her children are left grappling with the incomprehensible tragedy that has befallen their family. Their 11-year-old son continues to send heartfelt messages to his father’s phone, expressing his love and longing. Meanwhile, one of their 5-year-olds struggles to understand the concept of heaven, yearning to see a picture of his father in his new abode.
Karen and Jerry Lopez shared a loving marriage of 13 years, marked by their dedication to fostering children. Since 2017, they had fostered twelve children, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment. While six of the children were eventually reunited with their biological parents, the couple adopted the remaining six, expanding their family and making their eldest son a big brother to four brothers and two sisters.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are working diligently to identify the suspect, understand the motive behind the shooting, and shed light on the events that led to this tragic loss of life.
