Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire truly seems to be the start of a new era for the MonsterVerse films. Merchandise leaks reveal an original kaiju as the surprise villain for the upcoming project.
Merch leaks are far from anything new in the world of blockbusters, and it seems Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire is no different. A new swathe of toys from the MonsterVerse project reveals an original kaiju, Shimo, who will face off against Godzilla as one of the main antagonists of the film.
While Shimo has no prior films to look to, there are a few hints we can gleam about them prior to their appearance in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. Firstly, “Shimo” means frost in Japanese, implying the kaiju will have ice-based powers. We’ve also seen them fight Godzilla before in a MonsterVerse tie-in with Call of Duty, depicting the two brawling in a cave painting. So it certainly seems this “new empire” still has plenty of old beef!
The return of the MonsterVerse franchise
Fans of the MonsterVerse are sure to be excited by the prospect of seeing these two iconic monsters teaming up once again. The previous film, Godzilla vs. Kong, was a massive success, earning $470.1 million at the worldwide box office. With the promise of even more epic battles and a deeper exploration of the MonsterVerse mythology, The New Empire is sure to be another hit.
Legendary’s MonsterVerse began with 2014’s Godzilla and has since grown to include Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong. At the heart of the franchise has been the secret monster-hunting organization Monarch.
One thing that fans can be sure of is that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will continue to explore the complex relationship between Godzilla and King Kong, two of the most iconic movie monsters of all time. The previous film saw the two Titans face off before teaming up to stop Mechagodzilla.
Director Adam Wingard is back for the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, with a star-studded cast that includes Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Kaylee Hottle, Dan Stevens and Fala Chen. Terry Rossio, Jeremy Slater, Simon Barrett wrote the script.
