While appearing on a recent episode of the PBS show ‘Finding Your Roots,’ which is hosted by Henry Louis Gates Jr., Ciara was shocked to learn that she shares DNA with baseball legend Derek Jeter.
On the show, DNA samples are taken from the celebrities that appear on the series in hopes of helping them track back their ancestry. The show also helps determine if the subjects are distantly related to any other stars.

When Ciara was told that she was distant cousins with a New York Yankees legend she shouted, “What the world? You are kidding me!” Gates Jr. affirmed, “That is your DNA cousin.” Ciara, in continued disbelief and with a surprised look on her face, added, “Derek Jeter! That is crazy!”
On the program, Gates Jr. went further to explain the connection between the singer and the baseball legend, and how they both come from “a long identical stretch of DNA on their 14th chromosome.” Gates Jr. added, “It’s DNA, which we know, Derek inherited from his mother.”

Reacting to the news on his official account on X (formerly Twitter), Ciara’s husband, NFL quarterback Russell Wilson wrote, “Always knew it! Yankees Captain Derek Jeter and Ciara!” Ironically, Ciara and Jeter each recently welcomed their fourth child. Jeter and his wife Hannah Jeter welcomed their son Kaius last May, while Ciara and Wilson welcomed their daughter Amora in August.
Ciara’s episode of ‘Finding Your Roots‘ arrives in the 10th season of the series on PBS, which premiered on Tuesday (January 2).

In an exclusive revealed with TODAY, Henry Louis Gates Jr. also welcomed Alanis Morissette onto the show, where she shares a “deeply moving” story about her grandfather’s two brothers.
Speaking on the Canadian singer’s heritage, Gates Jr. said, “She did not know that they perished in the Holocaust. They went to the Russian front and died in Hungary. And, in fact, her family had shielded her from the pain of the Holocaust by not telling her that she had Jewish heritage until she was 28 years old.”
Gates Jr. also revealed that, unlike the rest of the show’s previous seasons, the 10th season will feature three non-celebrity guests for the first time ever. He said, “Their stories were just as interesting and just as riveting as stories of celebrities.”
