Has David Ayer given up on the DC Universe? The Suicide Squad director reveals he’s finished campaigning for his Ayer Cut to be released.
David Ayer has long been a vocal advocate for his director’s cut of Suicide Squad, tentatively called “The Ayer Cut”, to be released. However, it seems the director is finally done with the DC Universe. According to the director, Warner Bros. has no intent on releasing his cut of the film, so he plans to move on from the situation:
“Nothing about the situation feels good. Studio has no interest in releasing it. It’s time to run and not look back.” Ayer stated in a now-deleted social media post, adding “Naw I’m good. Don’t need to be walking around with a begging bowl. Gonna protect my heart more moving forward.”
What’s interesting about the situation is that David Ayer has previously been vocal about allowing the current DC Studios regime to find its footing before revisiting past projects like Suicide Squad. It seems, whatever happened, it shut down any idea in Ayer’s mind that his “Ayer Cut” would see the light of day anytime soon. While it’s a shame the director won’t be returning to the DC Universe, it’s good to see him finally moving on from such a painful time.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
