Manoj Bajpayee‘s movie, Gulmohar, offers an emotional glimpse into the lives of a family that wishes to feel like one.
Written and directed by Rahul V. Chittella, the drama movie also stars Sharmila Tagore, Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth, amongst others. It was released on Disney Plus Hotstar on March 3, 2023. Star Studios, Autonomous Works, and Chalkboard Entertainment produced the movie.
Gulmohar follows the story of the Batra family, who are all set to move out of their old family home. However, this shift in their lives leads to a rediscovery of the bonds with secrets and insecurities.

Gulmohar Ending: Does Arun return home?
In Gulmohar, when Indu is looking for the house papers, she comes across the last will of Arun’s father, where he had left everything to his brother. The witnesses to the will were Sudhakar and Kusum. Upon knowing this, Arun, the adopted but the eldest son, felt devastated. He confronts Sudhakar and Kusum about it the next day, but Sudhakar tells him that it was inevitable.
While he had no sympathy for Arun, Kusum tried to tell Arun that she was unaware of what she was signing. She also tries to tell him that Arun’s father took this decision in a moment of weakness. Sudhakar had never considered Arun as a part of the family and held it against Kusum for moving to Delhi for her son. Even though Arun helped with Sudhakar’s grandson’s education and even paid for his daughter-in-law’s surgery, Sudhakar could never forget what he had to sacrifice.
Later, a heartbroken Arun checks into a hotel, where his wife, Indu, comes to meet him. He tells her how he had found his real father and that he had been visiting the area but never went inside his tea shop. Indu encourages him to take the step, so he goes to meet his father for the first time. He does not tell him who he was, but hears his story about how he had left behind his son in a hospital because he could not take care of him. Arun realizes how both his fathers had loved him, while one had to let him go for a better life, the other had given him exactly that.
Does Adi turn to his father for money?
During his job interview, Adi was asked if he would stop working on his business if he joined the company. Although he had never considered it before, he knew that it was a clear no for him. Later, his wife, Divya tells him not to give up on his dreams and asks him to take the money from his father. He realizes that it’s not belittling for him to ask for money from his father as he plans to return it with interest later. So, Adi chooses to walk out of the interview.
Meanwhile, Amrita confesses to Ankur that she is in love with a woman. Although he felt heartbroken on hearing the news, he accepts her decision and moves on. Jeetu finally decides to get over his insecurities. Irfan also tells Jeetu not to let his self-doubt take over. He urges him to respond to Reshma as she had confessed her feelings to him. While it takes Jeetu time to do so, he does it eventually.
Does the Batra family reconcile their differences?
Towards the end of Gulmohar, Sudhakar gets confronted by his son and daughter-in-law for his insensitivity. But Sudhakar’s son finally calls out his sense of entitlement. He tells him that he does not wish to understand him nor wants to be like him.
All this time, Sudhakar thought of himself as the victim. He ignored the fact that his troubles were nothing but a result of people choosing themselves. If he had been nicer to Arun, Kusum would have never left Jamshedpur, and Sudhakar could have pursued his dreams. But even after that, his bitterness did not stop him from asking Arun for money whenever he needed it. No one in the family had any sympathy left for him. Kusum even tells him that she never wants to see him again. However, coincidentally Sudhakar spills water on the will, which puts an end to all his dreams.
At the end of Gulmohar, Arun returns home. The Batra family celebrates their last Holi in the Gulmohar house. The movie closes with Kusum preparing to rekindle her long-lost romance with Supriya Palekar, who is living in Puducherry.
