Director James Wan is about to embark on a wild journey as he is developing a feature film adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s iconic short story The Call of Cthulhu. It was also announced that there will be a video game developed based on the movie. Deadline reports that this is a “dream project” for Wan and that he has been working on the project quietly for the past five years.
The Call of Cthulhu was published in 1928. The story is presented as a series of interconnected narratives and documents, each recounting strange and terrifying events experienced by different individuals. The central theme revolves around the existence of an ancient, malevolent cosmic entity known as Cthulhu, which lies dormant beneath the ocean.
As various characters investigate mysterious occurrences, they uncover a cult that worships Cthulhu and a series of disturbing dreams and artifacts that hint at the creature’s impending awakening. Lovecraft’s tale explores. The Call of Cthulhu is a seminal work of cosmic horror and remains a cornerstone of Lovecraft’s literary legacy.
This seems like an awesome project for Wan and I can’t wait to see how he brings this incredible story to life! I enjoy Wan’s filmmaking style and I think that a film like Call of Cthulhu could end up being his greatest film yet.
In a previous interview, Wan shared his thoughts on returning to the realm of horror saying: “You know, I have a tendency to want to go back and forth. So, whenever I make a smaller film, I wanna go and make a big film. Whenever I’m doing a big one, I’m like, ‘Oh, I wanna go and do a smaller film,’ and when I do my smaller films, it tends to be a horror film. So, you know, I feel like the itch for horror is potentially calling, but we’ll see.”
What do you think about Wan adapting The Call of Cthulhu?
