Devery Jacobs is set to make her live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Echo as Bonnie. During a recent press junket, the actress spoke on how important it was to have indigenous people working on the project.

Representation has been a hot-button topic in the past few years. As society becomes more diverse, so too do the stories that get told. Echo is a prime example of this, bringing a Native American-centered story to the MCU. Devery Jacobs, who plays Bonnie in the series, recently explained why that representation is important both in front of and behind the camera:

“To borrow from the disabled community and a saying that they have coined, they say nothing about us without us.  And I think that’s so true for any marginalized community. Including indigenous folks.  And I think when it comes to telling our stories, making sure that there are as many storytellers from that community as possible is paramount.”

“And there’s been a hundred years of lack of representation and misrepresentation and an intentional exclusion of indigenous voices in Hollywood. So, I think to have us be a part of these conversations is integral to making sure that we’re able to accurately tell our stories. And then, aside from that, to be able to just be free to tell human stories and tell stories from our perspectives.”

Echo is truly shaping up to be a project that could have only been told by indigenous voices, with a large chunk of the cast and crew, including Devery Jacobs herself, being members of the marginalized communities the show represents. Here’s to hoping the series is only the first in a long line of projects with accurate representation in the superhero space!

Echo is set to debut early next year on Disney Plus, with every episode of the show being released at once. This makes it the first MCU project on Disney Plus to follow the Netflix binge model of releasing all of the episodes on the same day.

Alaqua Cox’s Hawkeye spinoff series will be the tenth overall original Marvel Studios series for Disney Plus. It’s also one of two live-action spin-offs from a previous series — the other being the WandaVision offshoot Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

Serving as executive producers on Echo are Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, Marion Dayre, and Jason Gavin, while Amy Rardin, Sydney Freeland, Christina King, and Jennifer Booth will serve as co-executive producers.
