LaBeouf’s journey towards Catholicism began during his portrayal of St. Pio of Pietrelcina in the film “Padre Pio.” While working closely with Capuchin friars at Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California, the actor was drawn to the faith that inspired his character. This experience sparked his curiosity, leading him to dive into Scripture and explore the works of influential Catholic writers.
The Catholic News Agency reported LaBeouf sat down with Bishop Barron to discuss his transformation and revealed he was agnostic before practicing Catholicism. Despite his successful acting career, LaBeouf’s life was plagued with personal turmoil and legal issues, which included allegations of abuse from his ex-girlfriend, FKA Twigs. However, his eagerness to resurrect his career eventually led him to a path of healing and personal peace.

He described his previous view of Jesus as “soft, fragile, all-loving, all-listening,” but lacking ferocity and romance. However, exploring the Gospels, he discovered a different, more masculine Christ. This newfound understanding deepened his connection to the Catholic faith. After completing the film, LaBeouf expressed his commitment to the Catholic faith. He revealed that he was participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) classes and was on track to be confirmed within seven months.
The Capuchin Franciscans-Western American Province confirmed the actor’s transition to Catholicism in a Facebook post:
“We are thrilled to share that our dear friend Shia LaBeouf has fully entered the Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation. The Capuchin Franciscan friars are overjoyed to welcome him into the fold and witness his deep commitment to his faith journey.”
While LaBeouf’s focus is currently on caring for his newborn daughter, Isabel, he continues to pursue his acting career. He is currently working on a film centered around the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
