Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus, who was attacked in the courtroom by Deobra Redden, a three-time felon, has ordered him to appear in court on Monday as new documents were filed for the attempted assault.

During a sentencing hearing for attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, Redden, who was facing prison time, made a sudden and violent move. As Judge Holthus was preparing to deny Redden’s probation request, he jumped over the bench and attacked her. Video footage captured the chaos that ensued as others fought with Redden and eventually subdued him. Redden’s attack left Judge Holthus with injuries, including slamming her head against a wall, striking her once on the head, and pulling out some of her hair. She sought refuge under her desk, covering her face. Marshal Shane Brandon, who was preparing to handcuff Redden, also suffered injuries, including a gash on his face and a dislocated shoulder. Additionally, a corrections officer and Holthus’ law clerk, Michael Lasso, were also harmed during the struggle.
Following the attack, Redden made several statements that shed light on his mindset. In a holding cell near the courtroom, he reportedly told an officer that the judge had it out for him and referred to her as evil. Redden expressed remorse, stating, “I’m sorry you guys had to see that.” He also questioned whether his actions were wrong. Moreover, while in custody at the Clark County Detention Center, Redden allegedly spat in a corrections officer’s face.Despite the traumatic incident, Judge Holthus returned to work the following day, showing her resilience. On Friday, new documents were filed in the attempted battery case, ordering officers to bring Redden to court “by any and all means necessary,” according to 8 News Now.

Redden may appear in court via teleconference from jail. In a separate court case related to the attack, a Las Vegas Justice Court judge will hear bail arguments on Tuesday. Redden’s attack on Judge Holthus was not his first encounter with the legal system. He had previously faced charges of malicious destruction of property and served prison time for domestic battery. Redden was granted parole in 2022 after serving a term of 12-30 months.
The video of the attack went viral on social media, leading to questions on how Redden could approach the bench and launch himself towards Judge Holthus.
