If a globally acclaimed music festival is asking you for money for a spot on the lineup, chances are you’re being extorted.
SXSW has issued a statement notifying the public to watch out for pay-to-play opportunities being offered by scammers. In a blog post shared this week, the Austin-based summit outlined that they operate on an invite-only policy and do not ask performers for money in exchange for slots on their lineups or a chance to audition.
While many may already be mindful of this kind of scam in a modern-day music industry fraught with fraud, it’s important to follow SXSW’s guidance to curb any further damage. The event’s organizers asked for those who have received demands for payment to notify its organizers immediately at this email address so they can investigate the issue further.
