Lil Yachty has tried to prove to fans that he doesn’t have “basic” music taste after being roasted over a fake playlist.

Yesterday, a playlist allegedly curated by Yachty appeared on his Spotify page and featured songs by Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino and Steve Lacy as well as rock artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala and Cage the Elephant.

The Atlanta native was mocked by some online for the selections, with one commenting: “people saying he’s got good taste like this isn’t the stereotypical ‘white kid who used to be really into rap but thinks he’s too good for it now’ taste.”

Another said: “This dude got my middle school playlist.”

After catching wind of the jokes, Lil Yachty denied that he had actually created the playlist and posted one which he said was actually by him.

The real playlist, which can be found on Apple Music and includes around 400 songs, features a wide variety of artists including OutKast, Sampha, Lauryn Hill, Drake, Young Thug, Marvin Gaye, Toro y Moi, The Smashing Pumpkins and James Blake.

Funnily enough, it also includes several songs from the fake playlist including Frank Ocean’s “Nights,” Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” and Tame Impala’s “The Less I Know the Better.”

While Lil Yachty is sharing some of his most beloved songs, he himself featured on Tyler, The Creator’s own list of favorite 2023 tracks.

The former Odd Future frontman took to X shortly after Christmas to reveal that he counted Lil Boat’s “Gimme Da Lite” among his top song choices for the year. Tyler’s list also included Mach-Hommy, Sault and Paris Texas, among others.

Lil Yachty also earned high praise last year from Questlove for his psychedelic rock album Let’s Start Here, which he said was influenced by some of his playlist favorites including Frank Ocean, Tame Impala and Pink Floyd.

After hearing the project, The Roots drummer wrote on social media: “How should I put it? I really really really really love this @lilyachty record and I love when artists pull off a good departure record.”

He added: “This aptly titled #LetsStartHere lp might be the most surprising transition of any music career I’ve witnessed in a min, especially under the umbrella of hip hop […] Shit like this (envelope pushing) got me hyped about music’s future.”
