Former first lady Melania Trump‘s mother has died, a few days after it was revealed that she was battling a “very” serious ailment.

Melania was notably absent from the Trump family Christmas festivities in Mar-a-Lago, as she had to be by her mother, Amalija Knavs‘ side, to support her prior to her passing.

The sad news of her death was shared by Melania herself in a heartbreaking tribute to her mother.

Melania is mourning the death of her mother, Knavs, who passed away after being hospitalized in Miami over a very serious ailment. Confirming the passing of her mother, Melania announced, “‘It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved mother, Amalija.

She continued, “Amalija Knavs was a strong woman who always carried herself with grace, warmth, and dignity. She was entirely devoted to her husband, daughters, grandson, and son-in-law. We will miss her beyond measure and continue to honor and love her legacy.”

Prior to marrying Melania’s father, Viktor, Amalija worked as a textile manufacturing dealer in her home, Slovenia. She and her husband eventually relocated to America, where they helped support their daughter through her modeling career until she became the first lady of the United States.

Before Amalija’s death, it was revealed that the former first lady wasn’t able to make it to the Trump family Christmas festivities in Mar-a-Lago as she had to be by her ailing mother’s side.

“Melania has always been very devoted to her entire family,” a source close to the former first lady told Fox News. “It should be no surprise that she spent this Christmas with her ailing mother.”

Donald Trump later confirmed Melania’s reason for being absent, stating that the septuagenarian was “very ill.” Although the former president didn’t disclose the ailment she was suffering from, he wished her a speedy recovery.
