An Ohio mother was taken into police custody on Monday for perpetrating a deceitful scheme reminiscent of Dee Dee Blanchard’s infamous grift.
Pamela Reed, 41, is accused of fabricating her young daughter’s cancer diagnosis and soliciting donations from well-meaning friends, family, and community members. The arrest has shed light on the extent to which Reed went to deceive those around her, ultimately pocketing thousands of dollars intended for her daughter’s medical expenses.
For years, Reed deceived her loved ones and the public by falsely claiming that her 7-year-old daughter was suffering from acute myeloid leukemia, as well as other medical conditions such as blindness and regular seizures. She even went as far as shaving her daughter’s head to further sell the plot. This elaborate ruse allowed Reed to garner sympathy and financial support from her community. Community members even generously participated in fundraising efforts, believing they were helping the family offset the mounting medical costs associated with her daughter’s alleged illnesses. The Noble County Sheriff’s Office stated that numerous people made monetary contributions to support the family during their difficult time. The collective goodwill of these individuals was exploited by Reed, who took advantage of their kindness for personal gain. However, the scheme began to unravel last week when an elementary school nurse discovered inconsistencies in Reed’s claims…
Miss Reed had previously told the nurse at the school that her daughter — identified as AR in the records — would have a port implanted in the future for her cancer treatments, which had caused the girl to miss more than 280 hours of school in the 2023-2024 year already, the documents state.
Furthermore, the nurse noticed that the young girl was not actually blind in her right eye, as Reed had previously asserted. Suspecting foul play, the nurse contacted the girl’s healthcare provider, who confirmed the suspicion that the child had never been diagnosed with cancer or leukemia. The avalanche of fraudulent documents provided by Reed to the school was exposed, leaving no doubt about the extent of her deception.

Upon questioning by law enforcement, Reed initially attempted to deceive investigators but eventually admitted to fabricating her daughter’s medical condition. She confessed that she perpetuated the ruse because she enjoyed the support and attention it garnered.
One organization alone reported providing the Reed family with approximately $8,000 to assist with the supposed cancer treatments. The financial impact on those who donated, as well as the emotional toll on those who believed they were supporting a sick child, cannot be understated.
Pamela Reed has since been charged with theft by deception, a fourth-degree felony. Her bond has been set at $50,000, reflecting the severity of her actions and the potential harm caused to those who were deceived.
This story out of Ohio comes close to the controversial one about Clauddinnea “Dee Dee” Blanchard. As we previously reported, she allegedly abused her daughter Gypsy Rose Blanchard and kept her sick for years.
Gypsy Blanchard, now 32, grew up believing she suffered from conditions including leukemia, muscular dystrophy, vision, and hearing impairments, and seizures. “Dee Dee” Blanchard also allegedly lied about Gypsy’s age, making her appear younger on documents. While being subject to abuse, Gyosy said in past interviews that Dee Dee collected fraudulent donations from aid societies like Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Gypsy Blanchard and her boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, were arrested in 2015 for the murder of her mom, who was found stabbed to death in her Springfield home.
Gypsy spent seven years incarcerated for her role in the murder of her mother and was recently released.
