Miss Cleo, whose real name was Youree Dell Harris, gained recognition as the spokesperson for a psychic pay-per-call-minute service called Psychic Readers Networks through a series of commercials from 1997 to 2003. Her catchphrase, “Call me now!” became iconic. However, in 2002, the Federal Trade Commission charged the company’s owners with deceptive advertising, billing, and collection practices. Although Harris was not indicted, the company settled by erasing $500 million in debt from its victims and paying a $5 million fine. Harris later lent her voice to a character in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. She passed away in 2016.
The Miss Cleo series, described as a darkly comedic drama, draws inspiration from the true story of the psychic pay-per-call service star. It will explore how her rise to fame eventually led to a contentious court case involving a staggering $500 million. According to Deadline, the series promises to provide an intriguing and thought-provoking look into the life of Miss Cleo and the events surrounding her.
