Barry Keoghan made a surprise appearance in The Batman as the iconic villain Joker. Yet it seems the process of putting on his makeup was more pain than pleasure!
Despite having a relatively small role in The Batman, Barry Keoghan’s Joker has been heaped with praise due to how weird and unique his version of the character looked. However, beauty does come at a cost. According to Keoghan, the process of putting on the makeup for his character was horrendous, with the metal staples nearly leaving him with permanent scars.
“That took six hours to get into that, and it was like oh man, I couldn’t sit still or six hours, I really couldn’t. I remember we were around five hours in, and went ‘We’re shutting production down, there’s COVID,’” Keoghan described in a recent video with GQ. “I was like ‘Huh? Really? What? What happened?’ There was this steel thing that went [into my cheek] and it was like slicing in. I was like, I’m really going to be left with a scar here.”
While it’s currently unclear how big of a role Barry Keoghan will play in The Batman 2, if he does appear, hopefully, the makeup team will find some way to expedite the process. Keoghan has already proven himself to be a powerful actor with projects like Saltburn, so it’d certainly be a shame to hamper his performance as Joker thanks to some uncomfortable beauty products!

The heads of DC Studios recently revealed that The Batman: Part II is set to hit theaters on October 2025. The first movie earned $770.8 million at the worldwide box office, a figure that makes it the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2022.
