Jonathan Majors Fired From Marvel Studios Following Guilty Verdict — GeekTyrant

In a not so shocking turn of events for Marvel, the studio has fired Jonathan Majors, who has been playing the mega MCU villain Kang the Conqueror. The decision comes following Majors’ recent guilty verdict in a domestic violence trial where he was charged with reckless assault and harassment.

We all saw this coming, but I guess Marvel was still holding out for the verdict to come in before they officially announced their decision.

Majors first debuted as Kang in Loki season one in 2021, and he has been a significant presence in the MCU as he was being built up as the big bad villain through Phase 6.

He also played a central part in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the second season of Loki, which we last saw him in. Besides his Marvel contributions, Majors had success with Amazon MGM’s Creed III.

A representative from Marvel Studios confirmed the studio’s decision to part ways with Majors, citing the recent verdict as the primary reason. This development raises questions about the future of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU, especially considering the character’s slated prominence in Phases 5 and 6, including a dedicated movie, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Either Marvel is going to recast the character and move forward with their original plan, or they are going to restructure things and set up a new villain to put the focus on. With the way the Multiverse is set up, anything is possible! Marvel is no stranger to recasting roles, though, so that’s is a real possibility.

When it comes to The Kang Dynasty, Destin Daniel Cretton of Shang-Chi stepped down as the director due to commitments to other Marvel projects. Michael Waldron, the showrunner for Loki season one, was recently brought in to write for The Kang Dynasty and the Phase 6 finale Avengers: Secret Wars, signaling a fresh direction for these projects amidst the current situation.

The Season 2 finale of Loki left Kang’s fate ambiguous, which might provide a narrative flexibility for the studio in addressing this casting upheaval. Marvel Studios, known for its meticulous planning and fan-focused storytelling, is undoubtedly considering the best course of action to handle this unexpected change while maintaining the integrity of the MCU’s expansive and interconnected narrative.
