It seems as though DC Studios will have more than one Superman in its roster! DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that J.J. Abrams’ Elseworlds project is still in the works.

Back in 2021, it was announced that J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates would be teaming up to bring a black Superman to the silver screen. With details of the project being sparse even before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios, many considered the project dead in the water. However, Gunn recently took to Threads to confirm the Elseworlds project is still in development.

While it’s a relief that the black Superman project hasn’t been canceled outright, J.J. Abrams has a rather bad track record in bringing DC projects to light. It’s not likely that Gunn and Safran will scrap the project outright, though it’s best fans keep their expectations low for when this Elseworlds project will find its way to theaters.

The future of the DC Universe

James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.

Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe after Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom!
