Sir Patrick Stewart recently reflected on his return to the role of Professor X in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and explained why it was a “frustrating and disappointing” experience for him. The actor also teased his role in Deadpool 3.
It was a lot of fun to see Stewart back as Professor X in the Doctor Strange sequel, but the way it turned out for him was completely unexpected! He played the version of Professor X from X-Men: The Animated Series and was a member of Earth-838’s Illuminati. He was viciously murdered by Scarlet Witch, who broke his neck.
It was both fascinating and disappointing to see Professor X and the other members of the Illuminati killed off so easily. But that’s not what Stewart was frustrated with, it was his experience shooting the whole thing. During a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Stewart revealed how he shot his cameo:
“I was alone. I think that the big scene, each one of the leading actors had the same experience. They were shot on their own.”
Stewart then pointed to the pandemic as being the reason for that and said the process was “frustrating and disappointing.” He added, “That’s how it’s been…the last few years have been challenging.”
Yeah, that doesn’t sound like an enjoyable shooting experience at all! How weird is it that the actors shot that whole sequence of the film separately, on their own?!
Stewart goes on to confirm his return to the role for Deadpool 3 saying, “I do now have every confidence that he’s still around. [Deadpool 3] has come up. There’s been a process.”
It’ll be interesting to see how Professor X will be handled in Deadpool 3. It’s so funny how Stewart and Hugh Jackman both said they were retiring from their Marvel role after Logan, and now they are back in action!
