While joining ‘The Richard Sherman Podcast,’ Lil Wayne, born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr., talked all things sports and music. In addition to speaking on various NFL teams, sharing his own Kobe Bryant stories, and reflecting on his career in the rap game, Wayne also addressed the constant criticism that fellow rapper Drake receives.
Sherman, a former NFL cornerback, began the conversation and said, “Wayne, you might be the Green Bay of the rap game, in terms of what you did with Young Money. I mean, you got Drake. You got your QBs. You got your greats. You got Nicki [Minaj]. You picking them too now.”

Wayne responded, “I mean, you know, I get that from my upbringing, from being around Birdman and Slim. I always looked up at how the hell y’all saw what y’all saw in us and we was kids. They would not tell us, not one day short of the first day all the way to the last, ‘Y’all are the best.’ And get mad when we come in there idolizing somebody else. ‘You the best,’ that’s what they taught us. That’s why I came with that from day one.”
Sherman then proceeded to highlight the growth of Drake and Minaj, noting how they are “like two of the biggest artists in the world.” He then asked Wayne how proud he is of seeing where they are now after scouting them years ago. Wayne said, “No more no less than the feeling of a proud father. Watching your child grow into the perfect young man and the perfect young lady.”

Sherman then flat-out asked Wayne, “Why they be hating on Drake like this? That’s what I don’t understand.”
Wayne, without hesitation, bluntly responded to the Drake hate question claiming it’s because he’s light-skinned. Weezy said, “He’s red. He’s light-skinned. You know he light-skinned. We been doing that, that’s history. That’s just American history, man. That’s American history. How would I know? It’s because I’m not light-skinned and not hated on. All light-skinned dudes is cool. So, yeah. That’s all it is. It’s just American history, man. Shout out to Yella, man.”
