Robert De Niro, the legendary Academy Award-winning actor, recently opened up about his experience as an 80-year-old father to his 9-month-old daughter, Gia.
In a brand new interview with AARP The Magazine, De Niro shared his thoughts on fatherhood and the joy he finds in being a fresh dad once again.
At an age when many people are enjoying their retirement, De Niro has embarked on a new chapter of his life as a father. Despite the challenges that come with being an older parent, De Niro embraces the experience with open arms. He describes fatherhood as “great” and acknowledges that everything else fades away when he looks at his daughter.
“I’m an 80-year-old dad and it’s great,” he said. “Everything that I’m consumed with or worried about or this and that just goes away when I look at her. So that in itself, is, you know, wondrous.” He went on to say, “She has a very sweet way of looking at you and just taking you in, and my other daughter Helen had that too, she just looks at you and takes it in … I don’t know where it’s gonna go later when she gets older, but she’s thinking, she’s observing everything and watching, really interesting.”
As an older father, De Niro acknowledges the importance of cherishing every moment he spends with his daughter. He expresses a desire to be present in her life for as long as possible, emphasizing the joy he finds in watching her grow and learn.
“I wanna be around for as long as I can to enjoy it, enjoy her.”

A Family Man:
In addition to sweet Gia, De Niro is a father to six other children from previous relationships. His dedication to his children is evident as he navigates the complexities of blended families. De Niro shares two children, Drena and Raphael, with ex-wife Diahnne Abbott, and twin sons, Julian and Aaron, with former girlfriend Toukie Smith. He also has two children, Elliot and Helen Grace, with his ex-wife Grace Hightower. Despite the challenges that come with co-parenting, De Niro’s commitment to his children shines through.
As we previously reported, De Niro and Tiffany Chen welcomed Gia on April 6, 2023. However, he didn’t reveal the news of his baby girl’s birth a month later during an interview with ET Canada.
The entertainer was in the middle of talking about his six children, when the Oscar winner corrected the interviewer and revealed he has “Seven, actually.”
“I just had a baby,” he shared at the time.
Although he’s been in the game for years and has expanded his family, he told AARP The Magazine how he thinks he has changed and grown throughout his prolific career. De Niro said, “I’ve learned how not to worry or tax myself too much. I like to just let things happen.”
