Comedian and actress Ali Wong‘s husband, Justin Hakuta, has filed his response in their divorce. The couple, who have been married for eight years, first announced their separation in 2022 before Wong eventually took steps to legally separate from Hakuta last year.
In Hakuta’s response, he implies that their separation is amicable and has also agreed with several of the actress’ terms, including those pertaining to their two kids.
Ali Wong’s Husband Agrees To Joint Custody
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Wong’s husband seems to be aligned with her on her current divorce terms and conditions.
Hakuta, like Wong, wants joint custody of their daughters, Mari, 8, and Nikki, 6. The couple also agrees to engage in mediation to settle matters that have to do with spousal support and separate and community property.
The legal document reads, “The Parties are in mediation and intend to resolve all support issues by written stipulation.”
This means that Wong and Hakuta will engage in private dialogue to figure out how they’ll go about resolving the matter.
For other issues, such as attorney fees, the legal documents state: “The Court [is] to find [Wong and Hakuta’s] Premarital Agreement, executed on November 24, 2014, and the First Amendment to Premarital Agreement, executed on February 10, 2021, are valid, binding and fully enforceable agreements.”
This means that Wong and Hakuta have a prenup to address those specific issues.
In 2022, a source close to the pair confirmed their split to People Magazine, saying, “It’s amicable, and they will continue to co-parent lovingly.” The pair have maintained a close friendship ever since.
Ali Wong Talks About Her ‘Unconventional’ Divorce
The actress has been quite candid about her separation from her Hakuta, which she branded “unconventional” during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
While speaking on her divorce, Wong said, “We’re really, really close; we’re best friends. We’ve been through so much together. It’s a very unconventional divorce.”
At the time, she also told the news outlet how she had just left a pickleball game with Hakuta prior to the interview and their plans for him to join her on her comedy tour, along with their daughters.
“I’m still workshopping it, but the bones are there and it came to me very fast. This is the first hour I’m doing since I started where I’m single. I think we’re going to call it the Single Lady tour,” the actress added.
The Actress Was Shocked At The Attention Her Divorce Announcement Received
During her chat with THR, Wong noted how stunned she was by people’s reaction to the news of her divorce from Hakuta. She noted that it was a huge shocker for her but that her mother’s reaction to the news was the “hardest part.”
Wong said, “I did not expect the announcement to be so widespread, but by far the hardest part about getting divorced was my mother’s reaction.”
She continued, “I had told her before that I thought we might get divorced, and she was really upset. She looked me in the eye and asked, ‘Can you just wait until I die?’ She was literally asking me to not live a life for myself. But she’s 82, what do I expect? She hasn’t had her period in 40 years. She’s in the sha-ha-hallows of senior citizenship. But it was still really fucking hard dealing with all her fear of the shame it would bring her.”
Wong further quipped that she didn’t have to tell any of her friends about her divorce because the story made it to several Chinese and Vietnamese publications.
She jokes, “But then, what was kind of cool about the announcement was that she didn’t have to tell any of her friends. All of them found out because it made it to a bunch of the Chinese and Vietnamese newspapers — I still can’t believe why on earth they would be interested in me — and they all called her. She died a million deaths in one day and then woke up the next day and was like, ‘I survived.’ She still sees Justin a ton.”
