The Batman was one of the best-received comic book films in recent memory. While a sequel is currently in production with Matt Reeves’ returning, many fans were shocked to hear that James Gunn was making the series an Elseworlds franchise instead of folding it into the new DC Universe. Some fans have even worried that this overlap would cause a delay in casting his own version of Batman, to which Gunn simply said “no” in a recent post on Threads.
While it’s good that the DC Universe movie The Brave and The Bold won’t be delayed by The Batman, that doesn’t mean the casting will come anytime soon. James Gunn has made it clear he’s only casting for projects currently in development, and as the upcoming Batman reboot still doesn’t have a script, it likely will be some time before the Caped Crusader gets officially cast.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, all four projects struggling at the box office. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
