Why did Tommy lose his music contract?
Tejinder “Tommy” Singh, or “Gabru” to his adoring fans, is a Punjabi music sensation basking in luxury. He is managed by his uncle Tayaji and cousin Jassi. Tommy is addicted to cocaine, and his music also reflects violence and drug use. After losing his music contract due to his addiction, he ends up behind bars. Tommy confronts the grim reality of his influence when two fans admit to heinous acts inspired by his songs. This revelation sparks a change within Tommy, prompting him to vow to mend his ways.
Bauria, a migrant from Bihar, once aspired to hockey stardom until tragedy redirected her to Punjab as a laborer. Tending to a farm owned by a drug-dealing landlord, she stumbles upon a mysterious packet, recognizing it as drugs. Seeking to profit, she unwittingly alerts the original owners, leading to her capture. Despite discarding the drugs, she’s held captive by the gang, enduring unspeakable horrors—sexual abuse, drug consumption, and forced prostitution. After enduring weeks of torment, Bauria summons the courage to flee her captors, determined to reclaim her shattered dignity.
In the nearby town resides Preet Sahni, a compassionate doctor running a rehabilitation center. Sartaj Singh, a young policeman, becomes aware of widespread drug smuggling sanctioned by his superiors. However, it’s not until his own brother, Balli, suffers a drug overdose and is rushed to Preet’s clinic that Sartaj fully grasps the severity of the situation. United by their determination to tackle the root of the problem, Preet and Sartaj join forces. Despite Balli’s reluctance, he’s admitted to Preet’s rehabilitation center, marking the beginning of his journey toward recovery.
Where does Tommy meet Bauria?
During his concert, Tommy switches to preaching instead of singing, angering his fans who start throwing bottles. Tommy, in frustration, urinates before fleeing to an old structure, where he meets Bauria. They bond over their stories, but Bauria gets recaptured defending Tommy. The next day, Tommy discovers an arrest warrant issued for him due to the concert chaos. Realizing his feelings for Bauria, he resolves to find her after the gang takes her away.
Preet and Sartaj uncover Virender Singh’s central role in Punjab’s drug crisis, supported by MP Maninder Brar. They gather evidence to expose Brar’s corruption to the state’s Election Commission, aiming to halt his reelection bid. Amid their pursuit, love blossoms between Preet and Sartaj. Tragedy strikes when Preet interrupts Balli’s escape attempt from her rehab center, accidentally getting stabbed by him. Jhujar Singh, investigating the incident and discovering their damning report, turns violent. Knocking Sartaj unconscious, he reveals his own implication in the drug ring, escalating the turmoil.
Udta Punjab ending: Was Tommy able to free Bauria?
Regaining consciousness in the presence of the local drug syndicate at their farmhouse, Sartaj, battered and bruised, faces interrogation from Jhujar, a prominent figure in the drug trade. Sartaj defends his actions, claiming they were for Punjab’s welfare. However, in a sudden twist, Tommy storms in, wielding a hockey stick and creating a diversion. Seizing the opportunity, Sartaj wrests Jhujar’s gun, neutralizing the entire gang and freeing Balli. With Tommy’s aid, Bauria breaks free from her captors. Balli, overwhelmed with emotion, kneels before his stoic brother, their reunion laden with unspoken complexities.
Eventually, it is shown that the government issued an inquiry into Brar’s activities, and there has been a huge crackdown on the drug menace. Over in Goa, amidst his crew members, Tommy calls Bauria to ask for her real name. Sitting by the beach, she catches sight of a foreigner having fun. Further inspired, she says, “Mary Jane,” to which Tommy flirtatiously replies that she is his life, and she ends the call before going for a swim.
