Werner Herzog Goes on a Pachyderm Quest

You know it’s a slow box office weekend when the big news story revolves around a film that won’t open for three more weeks. Dune: Part Two, you see, is tracking to open at around $65 million, according to box office analysts, which is welcome news considering the middling numbers this weekend.

Argylle retook the top spot but dipped 62% for a meager $6.5M second weekend, raising its domestic cume to a putrid $28.8M, per Deadline. Ouch. Worldwide, Matthew Vaughn’s spy comedy crossed $60M.

Sliding in at No. 2 was Diablo Cody’s Lisa Frankenstein, which opened in 3,144 theaters but only managed $3.8M, including a shocking $690K on Sunday. One might point to the Super Bowl as a reason for the poor performance, but keep in mind, this is the same weekend in which American Sniper earned $30.7M and Bad Boys for Life hauled in $17.6M.

Critics weren’t kind to either film. Argylle sits at an underwhelming 32% on RottenTomatoes, while Lisa Frankenstein currently holds a 49%. On a more positive note, Dune: Part One earned $1.66M in rerelease on 2,100 screens, raising its domestic total to $110.55M.

This week sees the release of Madame Web and the biopic Bob Marley: One Love. Can either picture attract enough audience to give the box office a much-needed boost?
