Superman: Legacy writer and director is getting a lot closer to casting Supergirl in the DCU. According to THR, the search has been narrowed down to two actresses: Milly Alcock, who played Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen on the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon, and Meg Donnelly, who starred in Disney Channel’s hit musical franchise Zombies and who also voices Supergirl in the DC animated movies. Both of the actresses tested in Atlanta.
Emilia Jones (Locke & Key) was previously up for the role as well, but it looks like she’s been knocked out. I’m not really invested in either of the actresses, but Gunn obviously sees something in them. I think there’s someone better out there for the role, but Gunn tends to know what he’s doing when it comes to casting.
It’s explained that Supergirl will likely make her DCU debut in Superman: Legacy, or maybe even another DC movie before she gets her own solo film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Gunn previously said of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow project, “We see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
Superman: Legacy currently stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer. Sara Sampaio, the Portuguese Victoria’s Secret model, has also been cast as Eve Teschmacher, the assistant and sometimes mistress to the scheming villain Lex Luthor.
Superman: Legacy will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
