When does Fantastic Four take place in the MCU timeline?

The Fantastic Four casting announcement hints that the film is set in the 1960s.

Marvel’s Fantastic Four casting announcement on Instagram featured a very retro vibe with the title, costume, and mid-century furniture design. While the year of the film’s events isn’t confirmed yet, the real clue for its potential setting came with Ben Grimm, aka The Thing.

He is seen reading an issue of Life magazine from December 1963. So, it’s likely that the movie will be set in the 1960s, just as it has been rumored and was also teased in Doctor Strange 2. The timeline will also match the 1961 debut of the Fantastic Four comics if it is followed.

Does Fantastic Four take place in the Earth-616 universe?

Matt Shakman’s Fantastic Four is rumored to be set on an alternate Earth parallel to MCU’s Earth-616 named Earth-199999.

Following the trend of the Multiverse Saga expanding the franchise’s narrative boundaries through several projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Loki, and Multiverse of Madness, Variety states that Fantastic Four will also be set on an alternate Earth.

This parallel universe setting would make sense because if the Fantastic Four movie takes place in the 1960s, then they would have had a contribution in shaping the events of Earth-616 (or 199999) if they were on it. Furthermore, the likes of Howard Stark, Hank Pym, Peggy Carter, and others would have been aware of them. But since that wasn’t the case, we can expect them to be from a different Earth.
