Recently released body-cam footage has unveiled a harrowing incident involving a Florida police officer’s drastic misjudgment, leading to a dangerous confrontation with a detained suspect. The officer, identified as Jesse Hernandez of the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, mistakenly reacted to the sound of an acorn hitting his patrol car as if it were a gunshot, resulting in him discharging his entire ammunition clip in the suspect’s direction while the suspect was restrained.

This incident, which took place last November, came to light through footage that shows Hernandez dramatically reacting to what he believed were gunshots by dropping to the ground, rolling, and then firing at his patrol car. His partner, Sergeant Beth Roberts, joined in the shooting under the belief that Hernandez had been fired upon. Throughout the ordeal, Hernandez, who fired approximately 18 shots, mistakenly believed he had been hit, even though he hadn’t been struck at all. The target of this gunfire was Marquis Jackson, a 22-year-old Black man, who was handcuffed and seated in the back of the patrol car at the time. Despite the dire situation, Jackson was not injured but expressed significant emotional trauma from the event, noting the incident has left him “damaged for life.”
“I was blessed not to get hit by any bullets or get hurt physically but mentally, I’m not ok. I haven’t been the same since and I don’t think this feeling I have will ever change. I truly believe I’m damaged for life!” Jackson wrote in an Instagram post.

Following an investigation into the incident, Hernandez resigned from his position after his actions were deemed “not objectively reasonable” by his superiors. Meanwhile, Sergeant Roberts will not face disciplinary action as her response was considered reasonable given her perspective of the situation. Sheriff Eric Aden publicly apologized to Jackson and his family, acknowledging the failure of his department to uphold public trust and expressing gratitude that Jackson was not physically harmed, as reported by the Daily Beast.
