Some casting news has come in regarding director Jason Reitman’s upcoming historical drama, SNL 1975. Reitman co-wrote the film with his writing partner Gil Kenan, who he previously wrote Ghostbusters: Afterlife with. The movie will follow the behind the scenes story in the moments leading up to SNL’s first broadcast on October 11, 1975, when a troupe of young comedians changed TV forever.

Gabriel LaBelle, star of the Steven Spielberg biopic The Fabelmans, will take on the role of Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels. Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) has been cast in the film to play Dick Ebersol, and Rachel Sennott (Bottoms) will play Rosie Shuster.

The full synopsis for the film reads: “On October 11, 1975, a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers changed television forever. SNL 1975 is the true story of what happened that night behind the scenes in the moments leading up to the first broadcast of SNL. It depicts the chaos and magic of a revolution that almost wasn’t, counting down the minutes in real time to the infamous words, ‘Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!’ The screenplay is based on an extensive series of interviews conducted by Reitman and Kenan with all the living cast, writers and crew.”

I have been watching SNL my whole life, and I am really looking forward to watching this movie! I can’t wait to see who they cast as some of my favorite original cast members like Gilda Radner, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd. SNL 1975 is currently in pre-production, and is probably a year or so out from hitting theaters. We will let you know more as it develops.
