In a recent ruling, Federal Judge William Martini mandated rapper Cam’ron to compensate a photographer $50,000 for illicitly utilizing a copyrighted image on merchandise for Dipset. The decision came down on Thursday, pinpointing Cam’ron’s copyright violation for using a famed photograph depicting him in a pink fur coat, matching hat, and cellphone on various Dipset-branded apparel. Photographer Djamilla Cochran initiated the legal battle in April 2023, accusing the rapper and his enterprise, Dipset Couture, of unauthorized photo use on merchandise like t-shirts and jewelry.

Judge Martini’s ruling was based on the principle that statutory damages equivalent to seven times the usual licensing fee would adequately recompense Cochran for the copyright breach while also serving as a deterrent against future violations. This information emerged from court documents obtained by XXL.
Cochran’s legal representation highlighted repeated attempts to alert Cam’ron and his company of their copyright infringements through mail and email, as documented by Getty Images. Despite these warnings, the defendants continued merchandising the disputed photograph on their websites and social media profiles. As a result, Cam’ron is now obliged to pay Cochran a total of $51,221.50, broken down into $40,530 for statutory damages and an additional $10,691 to cover Cochran’s legal expenses. Remarkably, Cam’ron opted not to contest the lawsuit, failing to respond or mount any defense.
