John Stewart played an infamously axed role Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League. New concept art for the film reveals Hal Jordan was almost chosen for the role.
So much was left on the cutting room floor during the production of Justice League due to the circumstances surrounding the film. There were even restrictions put on Zack Snyder’s director’s cut, preventing him from using a scene he shot with Wayne T. Carr as the Green Lantern John Stewart. Yet new concept art reveals that wasn’t always the plan, with artist Jerad S. Marantz revealing a never before seen look at a potential costume for Hal Jordan on his Instagram.
“I had an incredible time working on Justice league.” Marantz wrote on Instagram. “It was such a long time ago, but still remains as one of the most artistically fulfilling jobs of my career. It was a great team of artists working in both the US and UK.”
“Working with Costume designer Michael Wilkinson was wonderful. He’s definitely one of the best in the business. Here are some early concepts for the green lantern suit. It was such an honor to take on one of my favorite branches of the DC universe.”
It’s unclear why Hal Jordan was cut from the film in favor of John Stewart. While neither Green Lantern ultimately made it into the film, the two certainly would have played vastly different roles if Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League ever got a sequel. Hopefully fans are able to enjoy the concept art of the character even if it’ll never be brought to life on the silver screen!
The SnyderVerse era is over for now
The term “SnyderVerse” refers to the interconnected film universe that Zack Snyder created, which began with Man of Steel and continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Those plans have been scrapped in favor of an interconnected DC Universe consisting of film, television, animation and video game projects, with James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm.
Despite its mixed reception, the SnyderVerse has a dedicated fanbase that appreciates Zack Snyder’s DC Universe vision. Fans have praised the SnyderVerse films for their darker tone and mature storytelling. They have also criticized Warner Bros. and DC’s interference with Snyder’s DCU plans, which they believe resulted in the lackluster final product of Justice League.
In 2021, Zack Snyder released his four-hour long Justice League cut on the WarnerMedia streaming service HBO Max. His version of Justice League was well received by fans and critics alike, who praised its improvement over the original version of the movie, which was overseen by Joss Whedon. The release of the Snyder Cut has reignited interest in the SnyderVerse and sparked speculation about its future.
