Alex Garland’s Civil War is heading to SXSW.
The A24 film from depicts a near-future United States where 19 states have seceded from the Union, while much of the rest of the country is ruled by a tyrannical three-term president (Nick Offerman), who has ordered air strikes against the rebelling forces. Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Sonoya Mizuno also star.
Civil War joins the previously announced line-up of Dev Patel‘s action thriller Monkey Man, the Sydney Sweeney horror film Immaculate, and Y2K, the comedy from SNL alum Kyle Mooney that stars Rachel Zegler. Also set to screen is Ryan Gosling starrer The Fall Guy, Anne Hathaway romance The Idea of You, and the Jake Gyllenhaal-led Road House remake, the latter of which will open the fest.
“Alex Garland’s Civil War is a gorgeous, haunting, and powerful piece of cinema unlike anything else you’ll find in a movie theater this year. It’s a wholly immersive experience that expertly blends large-scale spectacle with an intimate understanding of character and personal stakes brought to beautiful life by a stellar ensemble cast,” said Claudette Godfrey, VP film & TV at the fest. “When the credits rolled on Civil War, we all looked at one another in a bit of shock, knowing full well Alex and A24 had delivered another masterpiece.”
Garland, who most recently directed A24 feature Men, previously screened his 2015 directorial debut, Ex Machina, at the fest. For its part, A24 premiered eventual best picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once at SXSW.
