The Best Death Metal Album of Each Year of the 1990s

For Oasis’ Liam Gallagher and John Squire of the Stone Roses, collaboration has a complicated implication, and richly storied context. However, from the moment the Manchester musicians first hit the stage together, the symbiosis felt effortless and impossible to overlook, ultimately yielding their new, affecting joint album. For our Spring 2024 Issue, Gallagher and Squire sat down with Alternative Press to unpack the project, start to finish — beginning with their first brief encounter on High Street, 30 years ago, weaving through their historic Knebworth set, and planting them firmly in the present, creating an album side by side, and, as Squire puts it, “literally living the dream.”

During their conversation with Anna Zanes — full of shared cheekiness, creative prowess, and admiration for one another — the artists uncover the trail from the Manchester sound and the Stone Roses’ early days to the incubus of Oasis and the ensuing ’90s Britpop boom.

“John lives a life in color, you know what I mean?” Gallagher recounts of finally working alongside his musical hero, “whereas maybe some of us live it in black and white. I mean, I haven’t got a clue what the songs are about. But I actually don’t want to know. Because they just feel right to sing.”

Preorder your copy today and stay tuned this week. The Spring 2024 Issue also comes with three alternate collectible covers, as well as stories on Laura Jane Grace, Mannequin Pussy, Vegyn, and more.
