CBS News reports that the aftermath of this frigid playoff game has been particularly severe, with numerous cases of frostbite reported among those in attendance. Dr. Megan L. Garcia, a general surgeon at Kansas City’s Grossman Burn Center, has provided a sobering update on the condition of those affected. She stated that an overwhelming 70% of patients referred to the medical center for frostbite injuries sustained during the game are being counseled to consider amputation a necessary course of action. This news follows Garcia’s earlier statements, made months ago, revealing that dozens had already been treated for frostbite due to the game’s extreme weather conditions.

Despite the dangers posed by such extreme cold, NBC Sports highlighted that the NFL does not have a set policy for calling off games when temperatures plummet to dangerously low levels. The consequences of this oversight became starkly evident in the wake of the playoff game, as initial reports noted that at least ten fans were hospitalized for conditions related to frostbite or hypothermia.
